from the weekend

this tumbledown home on fuller terrace reminds me of shingled gray gardens.
the tall wooden structures are like miniature castle turrets. those dense evergreens make it impossible to peer in. and the creepers covering the side walls make it fit for an agatha christie mystery.
maybe someday mabel will start sprouting creepers too.

cc and his pa played chase in the park next door to the mystery house. the handsome fulton men in their matching gray toques. then home to mabel to start a new collage. cutting and sifting though tins of sepia images till dusk.

these two

these two will meet in a few months and hopefully be firm friends.
cc still takes an interest in the bump.
today he sat his moccasins a'top of it saying: "baby needs shoes mama. cold baby feet." in the meantime we wait for the snow to melt. stay warm by the stove making beef stews. and twirl around to the magical sound of marlene dietrich singing hot voodoo.

since the weekend mabel has been our sanctuary. cc and I are filled with coughs, cold and sickness, staying warm at home and trying to rest. though he has been so sick at times cc's smiles and wonderful nature have helped us get through these rough days.
here he is playing dress up with sunglasses.
sidney, his new battered wooden dinosaur.
the tale of maria callas, and homemade zuccini bread.
cc in the suds tonight following another bout of sickness.

his pa came home tonight saying another snow storm is on the way.
what a topsy week it is turning out to be.

many things are happening here at the moment. the seasons finally feel as if they are starting to shift. the snow is melting. cc is spending more and more time outdoors as the temperatures stay above freezing.
there are changes inside mabel too. folding and sorting tiny outfits in preparation for may. knocking more nails to hang pictures on the walls. painting old wooden furniture. and cc talks nonstop, discussing his toys, telling me what type of food he wants to make, pretending to talk with grandma on the telephone. and talking to the baby bump.

"mama. where's baby mama?"
"baby is here claude."
"caud kiss baby. good baby. time for sleeps baby."
two moments after he cups his hands around his mouth and starts shouting
"baby wake up. time to play. wake up now".

this must happen a hundred times a day.
oh cc, there are so many more changes to come.

the weekend

strolling tree lined streets.
stopping for smooth coffees.
taking a saturday road trip sans our little folk.
finding musty roadside antique stores.
bartering for copper saucepans and vintage tea plates.
trying to sleep while baby is tumbling and turning inside.
reading the tiger who came to tea with cc a hundred times.
sifting through sepia pictures for making collages.
watching cc crawl through tunnels and dig in indoor sandpits.

that was our weekend.
now it is back to workday monday, and we are missing cc's pa already.

its dark gray

sewing calicos. making stews. painting tiles. making collages. baking oatmeal cookies. painting the fireplace. this is how the past few days have been spent. with cc assisting, his moccasins always tapping two steps behind me.
buying our wooden home mabel has been one of the most affirming reasons for moving to nova scotia. though we were helped tremendously by kind family it is still something we could never had achieved staying in hackney.
cc's pa is content with the house as it is. and wonders why he returns home from work to find more sepia photographs traveling up the staircase or a white fireplace now painted black? (me: "its actually a wonderful dark gray"). maybe it is down to spending so much more time at home than him. or maybe its the thought of second baby's arrival making me want to make mabel as 'us' as can be. whatever the reason there is something about carrying out these small changes that I find fulfilling. and creative. and necessary. and its satisfying to achieve them with cc the energetic apprentice in tow.

.flowers from cc's pa in an antique sailors jug, next to chalkboard painted kitchen tiles.
.mabels brick fireplace, was the same white as the walls. now a smoky dark gray that makes it stand out in the room.
.cc's much needed soak in the tub following a painting session.
.this hand painted floor is inside a nearby interiors store. it would be wonderful to try to create something similar to this in mabel.

the second monthly shoot

the second monthly shoot of our family.
a little overdue and filled with tiredness from a morning spent visiting lovely friends. still we settled on mabels front stoop and set the self timer as a beef stew slowly cooked on the stove.
cc was too interested in the street traffic to turn to the camera. though as soon we headed back indoors he started to twirl and talk to baby bump saying:
"dance for picture baby. dance with caud."
